Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) - the couples therapy that helps 7 out of 10 couples.
EFT was developed by Dr Sue Johnson, psychotherapist and professor (now emeritus) at the University of Ottawa. It is a structured and process-oriented approach to couples therapy. EFT helps couples get their disputes under control, making it possible to enhance or repair their emotional bond. It has been extensively researched and consistently shown to produce good results for the last 15 years. Studies find that more than 7 out of 10 couples treated with EFT move from distress to recovery and approximately 9 out of 10 show significant improvements. Please visit www.ICEEFT.com for more information. For the previous three decades, psychologists and couples therapists made the basic assumption that partners shouldn't depend on each other too much, and needed to first be strong individually as a prerequisite to having a good love relationship. In contrast, EFT is based on "a new science of love" which recognizes that love/attachment relationships are essential to us as humans. Partners are attached to each other and therefore naturally depend on each other. This different way of looking at couples relationships is supported by neurological research.
